Fire Safety in Commercial Buildings: Why Mezzanine Floors Need Extinguishers

Our technicians are trained to identify and mitigate fire risks based on how each space is used and the type of flammable materials present. Every assessment is carried out in accordance with AS 2444 – Portable Fire Extinguishers and Fire Blankets: Selection and Location.

Over time, many mezzanine floors evolve from simple storage areas into vital spaces for administration, operations, or additional storage.
As the use of the area changes, so too does the potential fire load and ignition risk. This may mean that additional fire extinguishers are required to ensure adequate protection.

In some cases, an extinguisher may be needed because:

  • The distance to the nearest extinguisher on the lower level exceeds 18 metres; or
  • The line of sight to the existing extinguisher is obstructed by walls, shelving, or equipment.

It’s also worth noting that some premises only have a single extinguisher β€” and when it comes to fire safety, a backup is always a good idea.

Did you know that a 1 metre x 1 metre fire blanket can only be used in residential settings?
For commercial or industrial premises, the standard requires a minimum blanket size of 1.2m x 1.8m.

This is specified in AS 2444 and is the size typically referenced on your Annual Fire Safety Statement. Ensuring your fire blanket meets the correct size requirement is a small but crucial part of maintaining compliance.
