Lit up Signage saying Carbon monoxide

Carbon Monoxide (Co) is a Silent Killer

When we think of hazardous fumes or gases, we often think of smoke and installing smoke alarms to help protect you and your family.

However, in many homes, Airbnb, boats, caravans, and vehicles, carbon monoxide is a silent killer and has in fact killed 15 people in Australia since 2011, with over 256 hospitalisations in 2018/19 alone.

What is Carbon Monoxide and Why is it Dangerous?

Carbon Monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas produced from burning fuel. The toxic fumes replace oxygen in the body and blood, causing impaired judgment, headaches, drowsiness, convulsions, and death.

Carbon monoxide is particularly dangerous in confined spaces such as homes, cars, boats, caravans and even small aircraft.

How to Reduce the Risk of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

To help minimise or eradicate the risk, the following precautions can be adopted:

  • Ensure proper ventilation – adequate airflow is key to preventing build-up of carbon monoxide.
  • Install and maintain Co alarms.
  • Develop and practice an emergency plan
  • Ensure gas appliances are inspected and kept clean.
  • Never use outdoor BBQs or heaters in confined spaces.
  • Never leave gas heaters on overnight.
  • Reduce the use of exhaust fans in other parts of the home while heaters are on.
