Gaseous Suppression Room Integrity Testing
Gaseous fire suppression systems do not form part of the statutory fire safety measures, but may be required by business or insurance.
A gaseous system is designed to discharge a suppressant gas upon smoke detection activation.
When smoke detectors activate, the suppression system automatically activates.
When a Gas Suppression System, such as Co2, Inergen, Sapphire TM, IG-541, IG-55, or FM200, is in place to protect vital infrastructure in the event of a fire in an IT Server or electronic room, regular room integrity testing is required.
The standard that provides the guidelines is AS 1851.1-2012 in Australia.
Ensuring the integrity of the room where the gas will discharge is critical to its effectiveness in the event of a fire.
Although this system of suppression is very effective, every effort must be made to ensure that, upon activation, the room remains stable and that the gas cannot escape or lose its effectiveness.
The room integrity test will simulate a system activation and measure the residual pressures in the room to ensure that adequate in-room ventilation will permit the oxygen to displace, without blowing ceiling panels and other weak points open.
The test will also check to ensure that the agent cannot leak from the room and, if so, identify and point out the areas that require attention.
This test will be required annually moving forward and can be included in your routine inspections if needed.
